The notion that depression occurs because of some intrinsic flaw divorced from social context – a biological problem requiring a biomedical solution – doesn't seem to hold true in most cases.įar from being a defect, Hari argues that depression is actually a rational and self-preservatory response to the fragmentation of community life in the contemporary world. He cites research indicating that, in many cases of so-called "endogenous" depression, the depressed person had suffered some kind of serious emotional distress in the year before the onset of their depression. In Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression and the Unexpected Solutions, Hari interrogates this dubious taxonomy. ![]() By contrast, “reactive” depression was caused by external events such as bereavement, trauma or some other adversity. ![]() Received wisdom held that “endogenous” depression was caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain antidepressants were supposed to solve the problem by restoring the brain’s natural balance. In a recent interview with PBS in Chicago, Martin talked about his feelings on the series exceeding the books. I don’t recall, for example, there being a drop of blood in the opening scene. No one, however, will tell the doctors who the patient is or what he got bit by, even as he bleeds to death through his clothes. Someone’s been bit by an unknown animal (guess who?), and they’ve been flown to a Costa Rican hospital. So, instead of this being a typical film or book review, I’d like to compare the two and argue why the book is crappier than the movie. Somewhat.īut when I watched the film adaptation, my perception of the book changed greatly. ![]() Written by Micheal Crichton, it was pretty typical of novels of its era: stacked with pages from cover to cover, typed in cheap tiny print, and somewhat fast-paced. Viv took the job to save enough money to move to New York City, but she never made it. The camera moves through the scene casually, like a party attendant, eventually drifting back to Harry as he defers questions from his peers, who cajole him to spill his techniques and trade secrets. More of a mood piece than a straight up thriller, this 1974 film contains one of my favorite sequences: That of an after-hours work party held in Harry’s industrial loft office, following a security convention of fellow wiretappers and investigators for hire. Torn between doing his job and intervening, he begins to suspect that he himself is being surveilled. “The Conversation” follows Harry Caul, a wiretapper who suspects that one of his recordings, of a conversation between an unaware couple, may be used in a murder plot.
