I've been wanting to read this saga for decades. Orion of New Genesis battles the forces of Darkseid at every turn! But what is their connection? Can Orion stop Darkseid before he seizes the Anti-Life Equation? And while Darkseid scoured the Earth in search of the deadly Anti-Life Equation, Orion battled his minions Kalibak, Canto and others, with the help of his New Genesis allies Lightray, Metron and others.Ĭollects NEW GODS #1-11, plus the 48-page story "Even Gods Must Die," written and illustrated by Kirby in 1984, and the original 1985 graphic novel by Kirby, THE HUNGER DOGS, which was designed to be a bookend to the entire "Fourth World" epic. A sprawling cast of characters was led by Orion, son of Darkseid, raised on New Genesis as a savage warrior on a world of peace. The centerpiece of these titles was NEW GODS, which introduced the warring worlds of Apokolips, ruled by the dread Darkseid, and New Genesis, led by the philosophical Highfather. In 1971, following his move from Marvel Comics to DC, writer/artist Jack Kirby unleashed the "Fourth World" comics - four interconnected series. NEW GODS, the cornerstone of Jack Kirby's early 1970s "Fourth World" line of comics, is collected in its entirety in a single trade paperback. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Theory of relativity by einsteinIn an astonishing twist of fate, the key to relativity’s salvation could lie in the aether. Einstein’s universe is also plagued by dark forces that his theory cannot cast out. Its failure to explain the behaviour of the universe at the smallest scales suggests that some more fundamental theory is waiting to take its place. The aether, if it gets mentioned at all, is an embarrassing footnote in its rise to glory.īut relativity has run into difficulties of its own. It is a byword for human achievement and scientific progress. Today, relativity offers us our best picture of the large-scale structure of the universe. Few victories in modern physics have been so total. Over a century ago, it picked a fight with Einstein’s theory of relativity and lost. AS FAR as dead ideas go, the luminiferous aether is among the deadest. 5/22/2023 0 Comments The night watch by sarah watersTender, tragic and beautifully poignant, set against the backdrop of feats of heroism both epic and ordinary, here is a novel of relationships that offers up subtle surprises and twists. Their lives, and their secrets connect in sometimes startling ways. Duncan, an apparent innocent, has had his own demons to fight during the war. Viv, glamour girl, is stubbornly, even foolishly loyal, to her soldier lover. Helen, clever, sweet, much-loved, harbours a painful secret. Kay, who drove an ambulance during the war and lived life at full throttle, now dresses in mannish clothes and wanders the streets with a restless hunger, searching. Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked out streets, illicit liaisons, sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch is the work of a truly brilliant and compelling storyteller. Meeting up with a classmate named Belet, Sik learns that the disease his parents are suffering from is a result of Nergal, the ancient Mesopotamian god of plagues. One night while closing the deli, Sik encounters some otherworldly creatures that attack him and destroy the family business. His brother Mo recently died, and Sik is left with the grief he holds for the older brother he admired, and a determination to help his parents cope by working in the family deli. Catch-22 starts as a set of paradoxical requirements whereby airmen mentally unfit to fly did not have to, but could not actually be excused. ‘That’s some catch, that Catch-22,’ he observed. Watching in bewilderment as, one by one, his friends are killed in action, is Yossarian, the ultimate anti-hero, who resorts to ever more desperate measures to save himself from the same fate. The novel marshals and exposes farcical bureaucracy, logistical confusion and a freak show of officers as dangerous as they are absurd: Major Major, the reclusive squadron commander who is bullied by his own men the sadistic Colonel Cathcart, who keeps raising the number of missions required to complete a tour of duty and the shameless capitalist Milo Minderbinder, who isn’t averse to bombing his own base in the name of profit. First published in 1961, Heller’s withering satire continues to hit its target today. Catch-22 became an American classic in the latter half of the twentieth century and elevated Heller as one of the most widely regarded postWorld War II satirists. On the crackling brown pages of saga manuscripts, trolls, dragons, and outlandish tribes jostle for position with explorers, traders, and kings. What emerges from these tales is a mixture of realism and fantasy, quasi-historical adventures, and exotic wonder-tales that rocket far beyond the horizon of reality. Beyond the Northlands explores this world through the stories that the Vikings told about themselves in their sagas.īut the depiction of the Viking world in the Old Norse-Icelandic sagas goes far beyond historical facts. The Norsemen travelled to all corners of the medieval world and beyond north to the wastelands of arctic Scandinavia, south to the politically turbulent heartlands of medieval Christendom, west across the wild seas to Greenland and the fringes of the North American continent, and east down the Russian waterways trading silver, skins, and slaves. Throughout the Middle Ages, long-ships transported hairy northern voyagers far and wide, where they not only raided but also traded, explored and settled new lands, encountered unfamiliar races, and embarked on pilgrimages The medieval Norsemen may be best remembered as monk murderers and village pillagers, but this is far from the whole story. In the dying days of the eighth century, the Vikings erupted onto the international stage with brutal raids and slaughter. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Paranormalcy by Kiersten WhiteSounds pretty cool to me.Įvie, our main protagonist, is funny, sarcastic, and kind, and it’s these things that really add to the story. I liked the fact that the story revolved around a “normal” teenager who is a complete girly girl, but ends up doing basically re-con jobs for a paranormal agency. Right off the bat this sounds like any other normal YA paranormal book right? True, but something about the story’s synopsis and pretty cover led me to pick up this book (plus it was on the bargain shelf in the store). Her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals glamours.īut Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
